The Darien community is coming together to help a detective who was recently diagnosed with cancer for the second time.
News 12’s Angelica Toruno spoke with the Darien Police Department about a fundraiser they're organizing for Detective Greg Benedetto.
"It took really no effort for the police association to decide that we wanted to do something for Greg, when we found out about his diagnosis,” said Darien Police Sgt. James Palmieri.
Benedetto has served the Darien community for nearly 20 years. Now, his department is asking for the community's help raising donations for him and his family.
"We're hoping to alleviate some of his family's concerns and make the process a little bit easier,” said Darien Police Detective Bryan Wallman.
Wallman and Palmieri are behind the planned benefit for Benedetto, which will be held 1-6 p.m. on April 7 at the Piedmont Club.
"We'll have a raffle, we'll have prizes, music, good food and hopefully we have a good turnout,” said Wallman.
"It means a lot to us when we turn around and need the community's support, for them to come out and show them that they appreciate what we do,” said Palmieri. “Specifically Greg, who's worked here for a while."
All proceeds will go directly to Benedetto, who was emotional when he found out about the effort being put together.
"I said to him, ‘I know you would do the same for me if the shoe was on the other foot,’” said Palmieri.
