The Department of Correction says an inmate has died in custody at the Rose M. Singer Center in the Bronx.
Mary Yehudah, 31, died Wednesday morning at NYC Health + Hospitals/Elmhurst.
She was in custody for a first-degree robbery charge following her arrest in the Bronx in February.
The medical examiner will determine her cause of death. This is the fifth death in DOC custody this year.
The federal monitor tasked with the job of reforming Rikers Island released his action plan yesterday. The seven-part plan lays out steps to address the serious harm occurring on the island to both inmates and correction staff.
The plan is expected to reform the leadership structure at the DOC as well as improve supervision of the staff, clamp down on officer absences from the prison, create an electronic system to ensure proper staffing, and improve security with a new operations manager.
Anisah Sabur, #HALTsolitary Campaign organizer and survivor of
Rikers Island, issued the following statement:
“I
can’t believe this is happening. This is unbelievably heartbreaking and
outrageous. There are no words for this. It is too much. These are human
beings. People in power are not seeing people in jails as people. Are you
serious? Twenty-one people died in these jails in just the last year and a
half. Mary Yehudah was only 31 years old. The City must decarcerate now. Where
is the urgency to stop this humanitarian crisis? Every public official must do
everything in their power right now to release every woman and every person in New
York City jails and stop sending people to these deadly jails. We also need
vastly more resources to stop the overdose epidemic in the community, including
passage of state law to allow Overdose Prevention Centers statewide.”
