The Department of Transportation is responding to complaints and replacing the Mount Eden Avenue sidewalk.
Some who walk along Mount Eden Avenue say they would prefer to risk their own personal safety and walk on the street rather than on the "deplorable" sidewalk.
In its place, the DOT will build a concrete sidewalk on the north side of West Mount Eden Avenue from Inwood Avenue to Macombs Road.
The DOT is also installing two enhanced crossings at Inwood Avenue and West Mount Eden Avenue.
The changes are part of a proposal to change West Mount Eden Avenue from a two-way road to a one-way westbound street from Jerome Avenue to Macombs Road.
Officials say improvements would affect more than 1,000 people that walk along Mount Eden Avenue each day.
