The Connecticut Department of Transportation announced that it will be replacing the railroad crossing on Route 123 (New Canaan Avenue) in Norwalk from Aug.1 through Aug. 5.
Route 123 will be closed at the railroad crossing during that time.
DOT recommends that those who use Main Street/New Canaan Avenue solely as a connector between the Merritt Parkway and U.S. Route 7 avoid the area and seek other regional bypasses. Those traveling through the area should use caution and plan extra time.
"This is an important project that ensures the rail crossing is safe for our passenger rail services and the public," said Connecticut Department of Transportation Bureau Chief of Public Transportation Benjamin Limmer. "We appreciate the community's patience during construction this summer and ask them to follow the posted detours or seek alternate routes to ensure safe travel."
The project is funded by DOT and performed by Metro-North Railroad, in coordination with the City of Norwalk, first responders, bus and transit providers, and other stakeholders.
They also say track work on the Metro-North Danbury Branch Line begins Aug. 1 through Aug. 17.
Officials say the project supports track improvements along the Danbury Branch Line and the restoration and improvement of key railroad crossings at New Canaan Avenue in Norwalk, Kent Road in Wilton and South Street in Bethel.
Bus service will be available on the Metro-North Danbury Branch Line during the projects.
