A bus driver from Bridgeport is being called a hero after he got students safely off a burning school bus.
The bus caught fire near Red Oak Road and Memory Lane at around 3:30 p.m. Officers say there were 11 students on the bus at the time.
They say bus driver David Llera was able to get all the students off safely. Witnesses say the fire was followed by two explosions, which sent glass and metal debris flying.
Officials say a mechanical problem started the fire. We Transport, the company Llera works for, gave him a safety award for his quick thinking.
