Battery manufacturer Duracell announced Thursday that its research and development headquarters is being relocated from Bethel to Atlanta.
The new facility is scheduled to open in summer 2026.
"This move is a significant milestone for Duracell as we continue to drive innovation in battery technology for many years to come and we're excited about the opportunities that our Atlanta move will bring. We're confident that this new chapter will strengthen our position as a global leader in the industry," said Duracell Chief Technology Officer Dr. Liben Hailu in a
statement.
Hailu said the company's decision to move to Atlanta was strategic and due to several factors.
These include "the vibrant technology ecosystem, access to top-tier talent, and the close geographical proximity to our manufacturing facilities will strengthen our ability to innovate with speed and efficiency and deliver superior products to our consumers and customers."
Bethel First Selectman Dan Carter tells News 12 this decision has been in the works for some time and town officials knew the company would eventually move its research and development to Georgia to centralize it.
The building on Research Drive is up for sale, according to Carter.
Carter did not know how many people in Bethel would lose their job or have their jobs transferred.
