The Town of Easton recently celebrated the beginning of what officials say is one of the largest renewable energy projects at a public school in Connecticut.
Nearly 1,000 solar panels cover more than an acre of land behind Samuel Staples Elementary School.
"It's around 972 panels," says John Dunster, of Northeast Energy and Design Solutions. "It will power, generate enough power for about 50 percent of the school's usage."
Dunster says it's one of the largest public school installations in the state.
"We worked with the Connecticut Green Bank to finance project, so the town of Easton and the taxpayers didn't have to pay any money," he says.
The current project was phase one of the town's larger plan. Leaders say they want to double the size of the solar field and power the whole school from that electricity.
They say if they can achieve that, Staples Elementary would be the first public school in the state solely powered by solar energy.
