Officials say Tuesday's legislative session could mean more budget cuts, and patients at social services will soon feel the impact.
State Rep. Joseph Gresko, from Stratford, confirmed today that the Ella T. Grasso Regional Center will be closing by the end of June because "the state is in a dire financial situation."
The Ella T. Grasso Regional Center serves as a home for the severely developmentally disabled in Stratford. The center has been open since 1982, and officials say 70 people lived at the facility when it was operating at full capacity. Officials say the facility has already stopped accepting new patients. Only 30 patients are left.
Donna Wellner, who has worked at the center for 30 years, says it wasn't easy to hear the facility was closing down, and she now fears for the future of her patients.
"I'm scared for them and I feel for them. I feel the sadness in them, and I don't know what's going to become of them," says Wellner.
Rep. Gresko says remaining patients at the center will be moving to other facilities across the state.
