'Everybody knows somebody with it': Silver Hill Hospital doctor addresses alcoholism around Sober October
More and more younger people now are not drinking alcohol.

It's Sober October, a movement that has taken off in the last few years.
It offers an alternative to drinking.
"Everybody knows somebody with it," said Dr. Amy Swift Deputy Chief Medical Officer at Silver Hill Hospital in New Canaan.
Swift says alcoholism is a serious problem in our country.
"Alcohol becomes this distraction from a negative emotional state where they are so distressed internally and tortured in their mind that the only thing that quiets it for them is drinking alcohol," said Swift.
Swift says most people know someone in their family that struggles with alcoholism. She says there is a genetic component.
"Once you know a parent or a close family member has struggled you have to pay attention," said Swift.
More and more younger people now are not drinking alcohol.
Some are turning to non-alcoholic drinks, from places like Athletic Brewery in Milford.
"They have really championed this movement of I'm in control, I don't need alcohol, this isn't something I have to have to socialize with my peers. And it really has taken off," said Swift.
"It's also allowing us to talk about what alcohol can be for others and that addiction is a real concern for anyone and everyone," said Swift.
Swift says there is help for alcoholism and it can start by talking to an expert.
