Experts on domestic violence are voicing their knowledge on the topic after video surfaced of one-time NFL star Ray Rice hitting his then-fiancee.
Thousands are voicing their opinions on domestic violence with the hashtag #WhyIStayed. Many women in abusive relationships do stay, and Kim Kavern with Safe Horizon says it takes an average of seven attempts for a victim to leave a violent relationship.
Kavern says a victim might not have the financial resources to leave, they may have children in common, or they may have religious or cultural reasons for staying.
Rice was dropped from the Baltimore Ravens hours after TMZ Sports posted the video, which seems to show Rice knocking out his wife Janay in an Atlantic City elevator earlier this year.
Soon after Rice was dropped, Janay Rice responded on Instagram blaming the media for the fallout. "Just know we will continue to grow and show the world what real love is," she said.
Kavern says she thinks Janay is facing a lot of judgement from the public. "We know one in four women are survivors of domestic violence at some point in their life and most of us don't have to go through it in the public eye," she says.
Safe Horizon is the largest victims services agency in the country and offers assistance to victims with programs and shelter. Kavern says there is always someone available if you find yourself in a relationship that you want to get out of.
Safe Horizon has a 24-hour hotline and assistance for domestic violence victims. Their number is 1 (800) 621-HOPE.
