Millions of New Jersey residents now know that the drones they saw overhead since late last year were real.
“After research and study, the drones that were flying over New Jersey in large numbers were authorized to be flown by the FAA for research and various other reasons,” said White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt on Tuesday afternoon.
But with this revelation, comes more questions and anger from Monmouth County Sheriff Shaun Golden.
“To those institutions on the federal level you’d think the FAA would have coordinated with the DOD, coordinated with the FBI with the Homeland Security, that wasn’t done and I think Congress needs to get to the bottom with hearings of why that wasn’t done that way,” said Golden.
Speaking with ABC's "This Week" on Dec. 15, former Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas said, “We in the federal government have deployed additional resources, personnel, technology to assist the New Jersey state police in addressing the New Jersey drone sightings.”

“They basically said, ‘Nothing to see here’ and now we hear it was research, authorized research and other reasons,” said Rep. Josh Gottheimer.
The congressman demanded more answers from the FAA Tuesday night. He's still waiting for a reply.
“Listen, I think the hearings are a great idea. We should have hearings. And hopefully get better answers,” said Gottheimer.
Gottheimer wants to know what research was being conducted and who was flying the drones.
Golden says the lack of transparency and the lack of communication, is unacceptable in a post-9/11 world.
“To further the mystery of it all, they put no fly restrictions in other areas of the state. Multiple across all counties in different areas,” said Golden.
“People deserve answers, we will keep fighting for the answers,” added Rep. Gottheimer.
Golden is also calling for new laws that would require every drone and controller to be registered with GPS coordinates.
