Dozens of firefighters from southwestern Connecticut participated in a unique fitness plan Saturday as they learned the techniques behind the Russian Kettlebell Training System.
Firefighters who attended the event say the system conditions the body to use muscles most efficiently, which is an important fitness technique in their line of work. According to Fairfield's Assistant Fire Chief George Gomola, the Kettlebell system is a popular fitness plan among firefighters on the West Coast.
The system involves swinging and lifting heavy kettlebells in a way that mimics the pattern of movement of firefighters moving and lifting objects while extinguishing flames.
The money gathered from registering for the event will be donated to the Fairfield Firefighters Benevolent Association.
