State and town officials discussed a plan Tuesday to improve the sidewalks along one of the town's busiest roads.
Officials say they have been planning to improve sidewalks along Kings Highway for almost three years. The sidewalks are riddled with cracks, are uneven and too narrow for a person using a wheelchair.
Town officials say the $2 million project will allow them to fix the problems between Chambers Street and Brentwood Avenue along the highway. They say they will be able to create new concrete sidewalks equipped with handicap-accessible ramps and pedestrian signals.
According to town officials, the project is made possible thanks to two grants from the Federal Highway Administration and the Local Transportation Capital Improvement Program.
The preliminary design has already been approved. Town officials say they hope the final design will be given the green light in the fall so that construction can begin next spring.
