Fairfield Police Chief Gary McNamara returned to work Thursday following a crash in which a BMW SUV struck his police car from behind.
The accident took place two weeks ago at the corner of Reef and Post roads. McNamara was hit from behind while pulling up to a stoplight. The impact was so severe that he had to be cut out of his cruiser.
Police say McNamara's car was pushed into a third vehicle. They say the SUV then careened to the other side of the street and struck a building. The driver and her daughter were not hurt.
Despite resting at home in bed, McNamara says he is still very stiff and sore. He suffered injuries to his head, neck and back, but hopes to make a full recovery.
Police say they originally thought the driver of the SUV may have been texting or talking on the phone, but now they believe that there may be a medical component as to why the accident took place. They say they will not release the driver's name or the nature of her possible medical condition until state police have completed their investigation.
