Fairfield police warn to be wary of thieves stealing packages
Local police departments are warning residents to be cautious of people stealing packages from their doorsteps.
Investigators say "porch pirates" have made the crime more common as more people shop online.
Fairfield police are urging people to reconsider how they get deliveries, especially with packages containing electronics and other expensive gifts.
"While they are at work, their packages are being delivered and the package pirates are looking for some prey," says Lt. Robert Kalamaras, of the Fairfield Police Department.
He says thieves either "stake-out" a neighborhood looking for packages left from an earlier delivery or they follow a delivery truck and steal packages left outside as soon as the truck drives off.
New Cannan police are currently investigating several packages that were stolen on Thursday. Shelton police also recently arrested a woman in connection to stealing 12 packages left by UPS.
Some residents say they are trying to avoid shopping online but others say they have no choice.
Lt. Kalamaras recommends that people get their packages delivered to the store they ordered them at, ask the carrier to require a signature or have it delievered to a neighbor who will be home.
He says many truck drivers are aware of the problem are keeping an eye out but that people should also call police if they see anything suspicious.
