A raccoon in Fairfield has tested positive for rabies, the first in several years.
The discovery was made after six dogs killed the mammal in their own fenced yard around the Greenfield Hill area.
The raccoon was picked up by animal control and was tested at the UConn Lab.
All the dogs involved had their rabies vaccinations and received rabies booster shots.
Police are using the situation as an opportunity to remind pet owners that if a dog or cat is not vaccinated and is in contact with a rabid animal, the pet faces a mandatory six month off-property quarantine.
