Fairfield officials announced Thursday that the town has received a federal grant to reduce traffic safety issues in town.
The goal is to address traffic safety issues that are caused by navigation apps that divert drivers off of I-95 and onto local and state roads.
The funding will increase safety for drivers, pedestrians and bicyclists during peak congestion hours by identifying high-risk intersections and improving street designs.
Officials say during that time, drivers exit the highway and cut through school zones, residential streets and areas that have large populations of older adults.
"By using such things as traffic delineators from out engineering department, not only does that change the way the town looks. It assists with pedestrian behavior, motor vehicle change, so people are not continuing the same actions that were injuring people in the past," Police Chief Michael Paris.
Paris says in 2025, there were 2,000 crashes, with nearly 300 involving injuries.
