Fairfield residents will have an opportunity to weigh in on the town's controversial speed camera program during a public forum next week.

First Selectperson Christine Vitale announced that a public forum will be held Tuesday night from 7 to 9 p.m. at Fairfield Warde High School about the speed cameras.

The town will present the first month of data collected from the cameras. There will also be a question-and-answer period afterward, and no registration is required to attend.

Fairfield started issuing tickets on June 1. The cameras are located in six school zones and operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

When school starts on Sept. 1 in Fairfield, the regular speed limit of 20 mph will be enforced. During the summer, however, the limit is increased to either 25 or 30 mph.

Two weeks ago, the town announced there had been an 83% reduction in speeding since the cameras were installed in May.

“They are documented safety concerns. And that is precisely why these locations were selected — not because they would generate revenue, not because they were politically convenient, but because the data showed they represented some of the highest-risk school corridors in our community,” said Fairfield Police Chief Michael Paris.

Fairfield started issuing fines last month to drivers going more than 10 mph over the limit.

Tickets can run up to $75, depending on how many you receive.
