Fairfield University simulated a refugee experience, giving students a small taste of what it's like for the refugees flooding out of Syria.
Fairfield University's Barone Campus Center was turned into a makeshift refugee camp Wednesday.
Officials say students had to sign in, then go to a station to get shelter, another for food and another for water.
Fiona Morrison, a freshman at Fairfield University, played the role of a 34-year-old woman war refugee with a family of eight.
Morrison went through the complicated registration process for those fleeing a war zone, learning the difficulties many face while in refugee camps.
"Right before I came here I took a 20-minute shower, and so, that's not even in the realm of possibilities for any of the refugees," says Morrison.
Fairfield University professor Julie Mughal, who spent a decade in refugee camps, says Americans should not turn their backs on refugees.
"They can contribute many wonderful things to our society, and they are screened before they come into the United States," says Mughal, of the Jesuit Humanitarian Action Network.
