Police say they are investigating claims by a Bridgeport family that a month-long elevator outage at an apartment complex may have contributed to the death of a man.
The Delgado sisters told News 12 that their brother, Alfredo Delgado, died last weekend after spending the past month trying to use the stairs with a walker.
News 12 first investigated the broken elevators in August. More than a month later, it remains out of order.
Many of the residents in the building are elderly or disabled and are trapped on the upper floors.
Bridgeport police say they have teamed up with local health officials to investigate if the outage played a role in Delgado’s death.
"This man was chronically sick, yet was forced to use the stairs with a walker and oxygen. We'd like to know if that practice, in the final weeks of his life, contributed in any way of his passing," police say.
The Delgado sisters say they encourage others to speak up about broken elevators.
"Raise your voice, don't let this to happen again to anybody in this particular building, or another one,” says Wendy Delgado.
