As people get ready for Saturday's 35th annual Swim Across the Sound one family says it's participating for someone special.
"Coach Megan, she was my coach from when I was like 7 years old to like 12," said Nathan Malsheske.
Nathan Malsheske, his older brother Jackson and father David have come from Southington to help others. The boy's former coach Megan Martin died from breast cancer.
"She was a big help to me and like, all my friends and all that, making us better swimmers, better people in the community, always like, trying her best to support us," said Nathan Malsheske.
"I think she'd be proud of us. You know, she loved competitive swimming," said Jackson Malsheske.
"It's a great opportunity to help raise some funds for the cancer support programs at St. Vincent's you know, it’s a good cause and it will really help a lot of people down here in the Fairfield County area," said David Malsheske.
The Malsheskes and dozens more will be competing in Saturday's Swim Across the Sound. Each stroke will raise money for people with cancer.
People will swim the sound from Port Jefferson, New York to Captain's Cove in Bridgeport.
"It's not like any other swim event that you know, I've competed in or my sons have competed in," said David Malsheske.
Last year's event raised about a quarter of a million dollars. The Malsheskes are hoping for more.
Saturday's first of three waves starts at 8:15 a.m. from Port Jefferson, New York.
