A fire broke out at a church in Fairfield overnight.
The fire happened at Our Lady of the Assumption Church on Stratfield Road at 1:45 a.m. on Sunday.
News 12 is told a passerby noticed smoke coming from the side of the church and called it in. The fire had reached the roof by the time fire officials arrived.
There is significant smoke damage throughout the body of the church and it took 2 hours to ventilate the smoke out.
Fire officials say there was no alarm system notification and the fire department wouldn't have been alerted if the passerby had not called it in.
The congregation met in the church hall Sunday morning for Mass.
The priest called the fire "a bump in the road," but says the situation is manageable and that cleanup has already started with repairs to follow.
