Fire officials: 3 families displaced after fire breaks out in Bridgeport
Red Cross officials in Bridgeport say three families are without homes Friday after a fire tore through their apartment building.
Authorities say no one was injured after the fire broke out Thursday afternoon in the building on Park Street, but the families affected are devastated after recently moving away from a homeless shelter.
Rosa Florres, just years removed from living in a shelter, says the biggest burden is remaining strong for her family, some of whom were home when the fire broke out.
Florres lives with her daughter who is due to give birth in just three weeks, and lost everything from a recent baby shower.
"To see them all crying, the only thing I can do as a mom is to be the strong person and give them the strength," said Florres. "But deep inside, you know when you're alone, that's when you break."
In total, Red Cross officials say five adults and nine children were displaced. Fire officials say there is a fourth family who lives at the apartment but are rarely home.
The Bridgeport fire chief says the fire appears to be accidental but the exact cause is still under investigation.
Community members are reaching out to help, including setting up a GoFundMe page for the Torres family.
