Fire officials say two toddlers sitting in car seats were almost struck by a flying metal spike in Fairfield Saturday.
Fairfield Fire Department says a 10-inch spike was sent flying by the rotating cutting blades of a landscaper's lawn mower on Lockwood Road.
The spike then went 20 feet and hit the car the children, 2 years old and 3 years old, were sitting in.
Officials say the spike broke the rear passenger's side window and came within inches of the children’s faces. It ricocheted off the glass on the opposite side before falling between the children on the floor.
The children have minor injuries from shattered glass.
