First responders urge residents to prepare for storms
First responders are urging Connecticut residents to prepare for storms as hurricane season approaches its peak.
Even though Hurricane Florence isn't directly hitting Connecticut, first responders are using the storm as an opportunity to remind people to be prepared and pack a kit for any natural disaster.
"It doesn't have to be a hurricane," says Patty Burke, of the American Red Cross. "It's just a disaster preparedness kit. We ask everybody to be prepared."
Experts say people should pack enough water and necessary medications to last up to three days. Lt. Bob Kalamaras, of the Fairfield Police Department, says people should also have flashlights, whistles and glow sticks, which can last for 12 to 15 hours.
People should also take evacuation orders seriously.
"Once the storm arrives, stay inside, heed any evacuation warnings, try to stay in contact with any local emergency officials for any statements," says Matthew Cohen, of the Westport Fire Department.
Officials say those who take some time to prepare each day will have less anxiety and have more options if conditions worsen.
