A retired Norwalk police officer is battling cancer, but the community that he served for decades wants him to know that he doesn't have to battle it alone.
After serving almost 33 years on the force, Lt. Tim Murphy, who also taught at Norwalk Community College, retired on Feb. 26 and he planned to move to Florida. He received his cancer diagnosis just days later.
Now, two local police unions plan to host a hockey game to raise money for Murphy's medical costs. NHL players are scheduled to attend the event, which will include raffles and a dinner.
"We hope for a very positive outcome," says Norwalk Police Department Sgt. Terry Blake. "In the meantime, we're all stepping up to do what we can do."
Norwalk Mayor Harry Rilling, who is a former police chief, says the event is a testament to the community.
