If you’re hitting the road for the Fourth of July, you’re not alone—and you’re not early either.
AAA says a record 61.6 million people are expected to hit the roads nationwide this holiday week—the most ever for Independence Day travel. And here in New York City, some folks are filling up and getting out.
The good news? Gas prices are lower than they were this time last year.
Right now, the average price for a gallon of regular in New York City is $3.21—that’s 42 cents cheaper than last summer.
But depending on where you stop, you might still pay more. At one gas station off the Belt Parkway in Marine Park, News 12 found prices closer to $3.59 a gallon.
And with more people traveling, traffic is the real issue.
Experts say the worst time to hit the road is 2-6 p.m. today—so if you haven’t left yet, it’s smart to go before noon.
Also—don’t forget to check your car.
Last year during this week, AAA responded to nearly 700,000 emergency calls—for things like flat tires and dead batteries. So before you head out, make sure your ride is road-ready.
