4h agoGov. Kathy Hochul announced a major milestone Thursday as the Metropolitan Transportation Agency saw a surge in ridership.
Hochul said this is an indicator that New York's recovery from the pandemic is pushing forward.
Hochul said that a new record was set Wednesday with the system carrying more than 5.6 million riders.
The subways and buses alone carried more than 5.2 million riders to set a new record.
Subway ridership surpassed the previous record set on Sept. 8 as 3.7 million people rode the rails Wednesday. This is 28.5% increase compared to last year.
Bus ridership hit the 1.5 million mark, with 1,523,000 riders.
Officials expect that number to rise 15% when the rider count is complete.
For many New Yorkers, they say while they do see delays and at times alternative service, they are thankful they can get around the Big Apple quickly and at an affordable rate.
The MTA's CEO said these ridership numbers are on the higher end of their latest projections and shows mass transit is moving in the right direction.
