Gov. Ned Lamont announced Wednesday that outdoor, in-person graduations in the state will be allowed starting July 6.
He signed an executive order to make it official, and says that no more than 150 people will be allowed to attend the graduation.
Lamont says schools will have the option to hold separate graduation ceremonies so that they can accommodate all students.
State Education Commissioner Miguel Caronda says seniors have had to sacrifice so much this school year.
He added that the announcement doesn't take away what some districts have already planned virtually.
Caronda says virtual graduations may be a better option for schools who have planned them.
BRIEFING NOTES:
- Lamont says schools in the state will be able to hold in-person graduation ceremonies starting July 6.
- Farmington High School will be hosting its graduation by allowing students and their families to sit in their cars and wear masks.
- Cars will then drive-up to get diplomas. School officials say the plan for the ceremony was approved by health and fire officials.
- Lamont says there are 112 new coronavirus cases, which is the lowest number of new daily cases in two months. He says that those positive cases came from 5,800 coronavirus tests, meaning that 2% of people who took the test were positive.
