A new proposal from Gov. Dannel Malloy would expand eminent domain in areas surrounding transportation stations throughout the state.
State Rep. Gail Lavielle says the bill would affect all properties within a half-mile of any train or bus station. According to Lavielle, the governor will appoint 11 people to make property decisions on anything that lies within those parameters.
Some business owners near the Westport train station called the proposal "absurd." One owner said that after 40 years in business, the fate of the property should not be in the hands of the government.
Malloy's office told News 12 that the bill is meant to work closely with local leaders, not further complicate property matters.
