Gov. Dannel Malloy's administration sent out an additional 71 layoff notices to state employees Tuesday, bringing the total to 236 since Friday. Malloy said that approximately 2,500 total job cuts are likely as the state scrambles to balance its budget.

Malloy unveiled a new budget proposal late today that takes into account a $921 million deficit.

The governor says the layoffs are happening on a department-by-department basis and will last for a while.

Because of the layoffs, the Greater Bridgeport Community Mental Health Center is losing 20 beds for transitional housing. In Norwalk, laid off workers will mean support for eight less beds at Norwalk Hospital.

Malloy also proposed additional budget cuts Monday afternoon. Social Services would lose almost $78 million, the Department of Public Health would see a $6 million cut, and the Commission on Aging and the Council of Environmental Quality would both be eliminated.

Union officials have harshly criticized the job cuts, arguing that the state should raise taxes on the ultra-wealthy. Malloy has resisted that call, saying Connecticut does not want to drive its biggest taxpayers out of state.

Malloy says he does not want to touch transportation funding. He says better roads and rails are vital to attracting new jobs.

He is also proposing more than $1 million in new rental assistance money.
