After more than 16 years, Greenwich residents resumed fishing for oysters in the Long Island Sound Sunday.

The popular New England pastime has been off limits while a specific disease depleted the shellfish population in the area, Roger Bowgen, a Greenwich fisherman, says. Bowgen says oysters are finally making a comeback and the bed was reopened for fishing.

Experts say the razor clam is also appearing more frequently in the Sound. Though some residents along Greenwich Point beach wonder if eating fish from the Sound is safe, the Greenwich Shellfish Commission says they test the water and shellfish twice a month to make sure they are safe for consumption.
