Police in Greenwich police are warning the public about an increase in black bear sightings throughout the town’s mid-country area.
Authorities say the bears typically avoid people. However, food can attract them to nearby homes.
Bears are attracted to bird feeders, garbage, outdoor pet food, compost piles and fruit trees.
Authorities recommend removing bird feeders from late March through November. They also say residents should thoroughly clean their grills after use, sprinkle lime over compost piles and add ammonia to garbage cans to mask food odors.
