The Bridgeport Roman Catholic Diocese announced Friday that a Greenwich priest allegedly took more than $400,000 from his parish.
The diocese spent more than a year combing through records at Saint Michael Church and says it came up $400,000 short. Bishop William Lori says Father Michael Moynihan used the money to pay his own bills instead of using it for church business.
When confronted about the money, the diocese says Moynihan said he didn?t keep detailed books.
Moynihan resigned from the church on North Street last year when the allegations first surfaced.
The diocese handed over the information it found to the U.S. Attorney?s Office. Federal officials say they are interested in the information and criminal charges could be filed.
