A community group rallied in front of the Bronx Housing Court Tuesday for a bill of rights for those who are at risk of losing their homes.
The nonprofit City-Wide Task Force on Housing is throwing its support behind Councilwoman Helen D. Foster. Foster wants a bill of rights posted in every Bronx and city housing court to ensure justice prevails.
According to the City-Wide Task Force, roughly half the people appearing in court on a recent weekday indicated they were not proficient in English to conduct their case. The nonprofit also says as many as half of these people did not know the court could provide them with an interpreter free of charge.
A representative from the Office of Court Administration said he would be willing to sit down with Foster to hammer out a realistic housing court bill of rights.
