The mother of the 14-year-old boy who was shot to death on Christmas Eve received a $2,500 check from two local nonprofit groups that teamed up to help her.

Solmarie Rivera was presented with a $2,500 check Saturday following the death of her son, Luis Colon.

April Barron, the founder of the Bridgeport nonprofit group Helping Hands Outreach, says when her son was murdered in 2008, she became determined to help other families going through the same ordeal.

Barron says she knew she had to do something after hearing about Colon's death.

That something came in the form a check from the nonprofit group the Needs Clearing House, which helped to raise most of the money.

Organizers say the donation is not for Luis' funeral, which was already paid for, but instead to help his family move forward.

Meanwhile, Bridgeport police released additional details Saturday about the arrest of a second possible suspect in Colon's murder.

Police Capt. A.J. Perez says he was driving home Tuesday night when he noticed something suspicious about four men in a vehicle pulled up next to him.

The head of the Detective Division says he pulled the car over and arrested one of the men on drug charges.

He expects that suspect to be charged on Monday in connection with the murder of Luis Colon.

As previously reported, police have already arrested Michael Majors, 23, of Bridgeport, and charged him with murder.
