Along the Route 46 and Route 80 corridor in Fairfield, emergency crews are preparing for a weekend storm expected to bring heavy snowfall to parts of Essex County.
Fairfield officials say the township is expecting between 12 and 18 inches of light, fluffy snow, with less concern for ice or strong winds. Crews will have 19 plows ready and enough rock salt to treat local roads, with supplies growing at the Department of Public Works yard.
Plow drivers will be joined by additional police officers beginning Sunday, officials say. Authorities note the storm could last about 36 hours, which is expected to put added pressure on police and DPW staffing.
Lt. R.J. Casendino of the Fairfield Police Department, who oversees emergency management, says street parking will be prohibited starting Saturday at 7 p.m. through Monday at 7 p.m. He is also asking residents not to plow or blow snow into roadways and to keep snow on their own property.
Officials say garbage pickup normally scheduled for Monday will be delayed until Tuesday.
