Listen up, avocado lovers. Health officials are warning that you should wash them before you start cutting.
The FDA says a study from 2014 to 2016 showed that one in every five avocados tested positive for listeria.
It says washing the outer skin will prevent bacteria from traveling to your knife and elsewhere.
To significantly reduce the risk, you can scrub avocados with a produce brush and then dry them with a paper towel.
Food-borne listeria can cause a variety of symptoms, including fever, diarrhea, fatigue, muscle aches and more, according to the CDC.
