Police across the state are stepping up highway inspections of large trucks and buses starting Tuesday, according to officials.

The nationwide campaign, called "Roadcheck 2015," is a joint effort by state police and the Department of Motor Vehicles that will last three days. According to police, about 25 percent of inspections will occur at highway rest areas.

Inspectors will check tires, brakes, lights and systems for securing loads. They'll also go over paperwork to make sure the driver is properly licensed and hasn't exceeded the number of hours allowed for driving.

The purpose of the program is to make sure the drivers of trucks and buses are following the rules.

"We are committed to removing those who think that they can cut corners to make a buck at the expense of the public's safety," said Christopher Henry, of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.
