Officials in Monroe discovered a small piece of history Thursday inside a century-old safe. The Monroe Historical Society recently rediscovered an old safe in the East Village Meeting House. Without a combination, it took a locksmith about 30 minutes to drill into the safe before the president of the historical society could cautiously open it. To the historical society?s disappointment, the safe was mostly empty. The only items inside were a religious poem, some tax receipts from the state of Missouri and the combination to the safe. However, there was good news from the discovery. The locksmith says he knows of several interested buyers that would buy the safe for $500 or more.
