The City of Hoboken is making a big investment toward safer parks.
A new City Council resolution will add a new camera system and permanent floodlights.
The first location - Church Square Park - is where a nanny was assaulted in broad daylight in late October.
“I will be the first to admit Church Square Park is not the same as it was,” said Mayor Ravi Bhalla.
“It's come up several times in multiple council meetings that Church Square Park was unsafe,” said Hoboken Police Chief Steven Aguiar.
Dozens of residents demanded change at the city’s last public safety meeting. An officer now patrols the park from open to close.
Residents say it’s a popular cut-through for local schools, the library and the PATH, underscoring the need for enhanced lighting.
“Lights have been proven to deter crime,” Aguiar said. “It's to deter any type of occupation overnight in that park.”
“It's good progress,” said Hoboken resident Puneet Parmar. “My only concern is that it doesn't last too long, just because the recent assaults are recent news. So, who knows if it keeps up after that?"
Other city parks will soon receive their own camera systems.
