Hoboken under boil water advisory after water main break on Newark Street
A boil water advisory is in effect until further notice for the city of Hoboken following a 12-inch water main break on Newark Street.
Crews have repaired that break and restored service in the area. They are not the only crew out - just five minutes away, another crew on 9th Street is tackling a second water main break.
There are also road closures in the area due to the first water main break.
At the intersection of Newark and Garden streets, there is a gaping hole that shut down the entire street and surrounding ones. Less than a mile from there, a second water main that forced part of 9th Street to close.
Residents and businesses were forced to pivot part of their operations, like at Kikilu Gelato on 9th Street, where they weren’t able to make espresso, but their main operation remained intact.
On First Street, the stylists at LHS Beauty Salon didn’t have to turn clients away but they faced some minor inconveniences in offering some of their extra services.
The city of Hoboken is no stranger to water main breaks, and this water main break comes on the heels of a major one in Passaic County that affected residents for weeks.
Rep. Nellie Pou's Water Crisis Prevention Act passed the committee last week. Part of that legislation would examine how the federal government can better work with states to identify areas most at risk of water crises and how Congress can get funding to these communities faster.
