It may be challenging to keep your home warm in these extreme temperatures, but News 12 Connecticut has some tips.
"Our oil drivers, a lot of them have been working every day for the past three weeks," says David Cohen, president of Standard Oil in Bridgeport.
Demand for home heating oil is up in these cold conditions, and the demand won't stop with two more months of winter left.
"Our prediction of how much ... when to deliver oil is based on sort of like a steady consumption level. So, if you're doing anything radically different, just let us know," says Cohen.
If you run out of oil, you'll pay later if you have to replace your boiler. Make sure you've had your boiler serviced. Regular maintenance checks of your boiler can help you maximize your heating without spending more on heating oil.
Installing a programmable thermostat is not a bad idea. A programmable thermostat can automatically adjust the heat throughout the day to reduce oil consumption.
"Just don't turn the heat down to low, because you may have a frozen pipe especially in this type of weather and actually, I even turn my water faucet on a little bit just to keep the water flowing so you don't freeze a pipe. But other than that, just stay warm," says Cohen.
It's also a good idea to make sure your home is properly insulated. Check for drafts around windows and doors.
