A homebound WWII Bridgeport veteran finally received her COVID-19 vaccine Wednesday thanks to a story News 12 brought attention to, her family says.
News 12 was there as Navy veteran 97-year-old Dorothy Loper got her shot from Bridgeport Fire Department Lt. Tom Varanelli, who came with health official Tammy Papa from the City of Bridgeport to make sure Loper was not left out of the process.
As News 12 reported, Loper's daughters say they tried for weeks to get their mom the shot, but it wasn't until they told her story on News 12 Connecticut that officials came together and made it happen.
The daughters say the mother fought for the U.S. at Pearl Harbor and that's why they fought for her to get the shot.
"I think it went so smoothly, I'm so grateful and relieved. Mom didn't even flinch, and everybody was just so kind, wonderful, and concerned and I'm grateful," Perez says.
City officials say they will extend the same service to any homebound person who qualifies for the vaccine.
