Connecticut House Republicans in Hartford pushed their solution to the budget crisis on Tuesday.

While their plan gets rid of the popular car tax cap, it otherwise avoids any new taxes. In exchange, state workers would face major changes to their benefits, plus a salary freeze for the next three years.

Gov. Dannel Malloy said Tuesday in Stamford that the Republican plan is unworkable.

"If you went to a pure 401(k), our average contribution would be substantially higher than it will be under the plan that we negotiated," the governor said.

With no budget in place, Malloy is running the state on a barebones, month-to-month basis. Cities and towns stand to lose more than $500 million, especially in school funding.

"The time for the releases and the dueling press conferences is over, and it's time for the adults to get in a room together to negotiate," said the Connecticut Conference of Municipalities.
