How much do you need to earn to be in the top 1% of your state?
So how much exactly do you need to earn to be considered in the top 1% of earners? A lot - suggests a new poll.
A study by SmartAsset says an American family needs an income of $597,815 to be considered in the top 1% of earners nationwide.
It does vary from state to state. The threshold is highest in Connecticut, where a family needs to earn $896,490. New York comes in third, behind Massachusetts, with a family needing to earn $777,126.  One-percenters in New Jersey come in fourth.  They need to earn at least $760,463.
Those living in West Virginia by contrast need only an average of just over $350,000, says the study.
