The interim commissioner of the Department of Motor Vehicles testified Friday that the private vendor handling the DMV's computer upgrade is making progress fixing the bugs in the new system.
"We know the problems, and we're fixing them," Dennis Murphy told a legislative panel on problems that have plagued Connecticut drivers since the new software was rolled out.
Friday was only Murphy's fourth day in office since Gov. Dannel Malloy appointed him to succeed Andres Ayala, of Bridgeport.
Ayala stepped down after the glitchy new computer system led to wait times of up to seven hours as well as unwarranted suspensions of vehicle registrations.
The 3M company is on the second step of its three-phase overhaul to the troubled system, Murphy said.
Rep. Gail Lavielle and a group of other legislators told Murphy that they want the DMV to make customer service a top priority.
Murphy conceded that the long wait times were unacceptable and said the DMV is reviewing employee operations internally.
