Tuesday's heavy rain and wind led to both power outages and flash floods in Westport.

According to Eversource's website, nearly 550 customers in the town had their power knocked out, most in the area just west of the Saugatuck River.

The traffic light at the intersection of Post Road and King Highway was also out.

The culprit appeared to be a large tree that fell down on Kings Highway, landing on several power lines and according to neighbors, dragging down even more around the corner.

"The thing above us just exploded, power went out, and then all of a sudden it looked like an ocean coming down our driveway," described Bill Gross, who lost power. "It was scary, it was very dramatic."

Bernardo Llovera said came out of his house to see what had happened when power went out, and "People were coming in and then having to turn around and leave so it was kind of a bit of chaos at the time."

Just down the hill from there, water was flooding the area right before the bridge downtown, and parking lot for several businesses, including Bar Taco.

State Department of Transportation workers were on scene helping drain it out, but not before at least one car got stuck.

Driver Marcus Cottom was physically scooping water out of the inside of it when News 12 caught up with him, saying he and two friends had to physically push the car out on to dry land.

"One second it wasn't there, and the water was lower then the next second the water was petty high to the point where the car actually just shut off and the battery cut off so, we had to do what we had to do," he said.
