Along the boardwalk in Brighton Beach, there are broken wood panels, loose screws, raised planks and holes.

For frequent walkers like Anna Geller, it's not just an eyesore, but a safety concern.

"There are so many seniors and children that really can't see the damage that's there," Geller says.

She says she has reported the damage to 311, but hasn't seen any changes.

"We keep having promises that repairs will be done, but they're never done," she says.

Garbage cans have also been placed over many of the holes.

"I tripped a few times. It does need a little more maintenance," boardwalk runner Toby says.

"It's horrible. What can I do, what can I say? Where do you go?" asks neighbor Virginia Kartalis.

The city announced $1 billion towards Coney Island in December, which includes a project to upgrade the entire boardwalk.

But neighbors like Geller say these plans aren't quick-enough fixes.

"What do we as residents do in the meantime. How do we keep our children safe, or grandparents safe, our parents safe," Gellery says

"We have four teams that will be doing replacement boards as we go," Brooklyn Borough Parks Commissioner Martin Maher told News 12. "We're trying to get the worst areas first. They replace board by board. It's not a quick and easy process."

The commissioner said the maintenance work begins this month and will continue through November.
