A local high school student is turning people's trash into treasures for foster children in need.
Leighton Schur, from Redding, says he met a friend who was in foster care a few years ago. It prompted him to want to help.
He started collecting bags of thousands of cans and bottles, then depositing them for money. Schur has raised almost $2,500 with the Cans for Kids fundraiser to help foster children in the state, and is even sending some of them to camps.
He even created his own charity called Future of your Future. Schur says he never thought people with all this recyclable waste would be willing to donate it for something good.
Schur says he is also looking into animal therapy for abused children.
